  • Yes, non-Black nurses can join ABNAO. The role of non-Black nurse allies/accomplices in ABNAO is to uplift and center the voices of our Black community, advocate for the removal of barriers to professional advancement for Black nurses, and disrupt systemic racism, implicit bias, and microaggressions in the workplace.

  • ABNAO is dedicated to diversifying the nursing workforce and providing an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty that affects our communities. We are excited to host The Mini Nurse Academy curriculum in a variety of settings to expose children in 3rd-6th grade to the nursing profession. Visit our Mini Nurse Academy page to learn more!

  • Yes! We have many members in SW Washington engaged in our chapter. If you are in another state you can find your local chapter through NBNA.org. If you have any additional questions email us.

  • You must be a registered nurse, nursing student, LPN, or retired RN to be a member of the Alliance of Black Nurses Association of Oregon or ABNAO (pronounced ab (like in “abs”) -now). If you are an aspiring nurse feel free to reach out to us for support in creating a pathway to membership.

  • YES! There are Black nurses throughout the state of Oregon and SW Washington. ABNAO is a unifying safe space that supports our ability to thrive. Coping with Oregon’s historically racist past and systemic racism in healthcare is a reality that many of us face in the Pacific Northwest. Membership in ABNAO provides a cultural connection as well as a professional network that supports strengthening the community of Black Nurses throughout the state.

  • Absolutely! In partnership with The Black United Fund, ABNAO offers two $2000 scholarships: The Willesha E. Wade and Alliance of Black Nurses yearly. Additionally, our national organization also provides a host of scholarship funding opportunities. Please visit our scholarship page to apply.

  • As a member of your local chapter and national org you have access to a network of Black nurses, programming, and committee activities to develop:

    • Cultivate Interpersonal relationships with other Black nurses

    • Mentorship for nursing students

    • Scholarship funding

  • It is $260.00 total which gains you membership to the National Black Nurses Association and the local Oregon chapter. You have to be a National member to participate in our chapter activities.
